About Us

Intimate sailing experiences in tropical North Queensland

Born from a Passion for Sailing

I'm James, originally from the U.K., and I've been calling Queensland home for the past 12 years. What started as a love for the ocean and sailing has grown into Casual Fare Sailing Charters over the past decade. We began with a simple vision: to offer truly intimate sailing experiences that larger operators simply can't match. Our Compass Innovator yacht, which once served as a bareboat hire in the Whitsundays, became the perfect vessel for our dream. We deliberately keep our groups small—maximum six passengers—because we believe the best memories are made when you're not just another face in the crowd. Working closely with local businesses like Townsville Yacht Club, Mello Cafe, and Gelatissimo, we've created something special: authentic Townsville sailing experiences that feel personal, relaxed, and genuinely memorable. Every cruise we run reflects our commitment to quality over quantity.

Intimate sailing experiences for six

At Casual Fare Sailing Charters, we believe sailing should be personal, not packed. While other operators cram 15 passengers onto their boats, we limit every cruise to just six guests maximum. This isn't just about comfort—it's about creating genuine connections with the water, the wind, and each other. For over 10 years, James has been sharing his passion for sailing across Townsville's stunning waters, from sunrise breakfasts to magical sunset moments over Magnetic Island. We're proud to partner with local businesses like Townsville Yacht Club, Mello Cafe, and Gelatissimo, ensuring every experience showcases the best of our community. Our Compass Innovator yacht, seasoned by years in the Whitsundays, provides the perfect platform for authentic sailing adventures. We guarantee departures with just two passengers—no disappointing cancellations. When you sail with us, you're not just another booking; you're joining a small crew dedicated to showing you why Townsville's waters are truly special.

Why Choose Us?

Experience Townsville's most intimate sailing adventures with our small-group charters, local partnerships, and decade of trusted service on the beautiful waters around Magnetic Island.

Exceeded expectation. Highly personal experience aboard a lovely vessel with a kind, gentle and experienced crew. All safety guidelines met with the freedom to be seated where you felt most comfortable…in our case on the bow enjoying spectacular views of Townsville, Magnetic Island and Cape Cleveland as the sun set against the backdrop of other boats enjoying the water. A complimentary bubbly was the icing on the cake. Jimmy checked in regularly to ensure all guests were comfortable and gave ample warning of manouevering the boat or shifting the sails. Easy to book, well communicated and timings were prompt. Absolute value for money. Looking forward to going again!

Casual Fare was a small yacht with 4 guests, Cptn James was extremely patient with me and professional when a wind blew across quite suddenly. I love a bit of choppy water but James jumped about getting sails sorted and 1st mate Pete took the wheel. I felt quite safe, it wasn't the best weather with stronger winds but as it calmed and we had a glass or two of bubbles, Cptn James and 1st mate Pete gave us a sensational sunset cruise. I absolutely loved it, It is a *must do* sail with Casual Fare while in Townsville. Remember Casual Fare at Townsville Yacht Club Thankyou so very much James.
